In an almost 30-year career that has seen her break barriers by becoming the first black model to appear on several international issue of Vogue and Time magazine, Naomi Campbell’s is by far one of the greatest modelling success stories. Discovered at age 15 whilst shopping in Covent Garden the native Londoner soon took the fashion industry by storm, appearing on over 500 magazine covers, walking the runway at almost every major fashion week and being crowned one of the original 6 supermodels alongside the likes of Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista. Still in high demand from designers all over the globe, Campbell is still one of the most recognisable and highest paid models in the business, so it’s no wonder that at tonight’s annual CFDA Awards she’s set to receive the ‘Style Icon’ award- an award we think is WAY overdue.

To celebrate Naomi receiving the award we here at Looker have compiled the following list of the legendary supermodels most iconic looks, and believe us there were a lot to choose from…

Has there ever been a more perfect fashion-meets-music moment then George Michaels’s ‘Freedom ‘90’ video? Featuring all 6 of the original supermodels the song received iconic status when it was used for Gianni Versace’s Autumn/Winter 1991 show in which Campbell strutted down the runway lip-synching the song with fellow models in this yellow mini dress and chic bob, making sure that all eyes were on her and cemented her status as a 90s legend…

There’s no doubt in anybody’s mind that falling on the runway is every model’s worst nightmare! But when you’re Naomi Campbell even falling over is graceful (totally not fair if you ask us). Proving that even supermodels can have trouble walking in heels Naomi famously fell whilst walking in Vivienne Westwood’s 1993 show at Paris Fashion Week, but like any true professional she laughed it off, got back up and finished the show in style. She was even pictured the following week wearing the same shows at Kate Moss’ birthday party! We’re not sure we could ever be that brave…

Proving why she is still one of the most sought-after models in the industry, Naomi was the name on everybody’s lips when she walked the runway for Jean Paul Gaultier in 2015. Closing the French couturier’s wedding themed show, Campbell appeared as the actual bridal bouquet and hit the runway to cheers from the audience and walked hand in hand with Gaultier himself as an encore!

Side note- we’re totally not jealous of those legs…

community service-

Now we’re not judging but, aside from her legendary career, when you think of Naomi Campbell you think of her infamous temper and it was this temper that also led to one of her most iconic looks to date- this metallic Dolce and Gabbana gown that she wore to, wait for it, her first day of community service! The moment will go down in fashion history as one of the best displays of glamour ever seen, with Campbell herself explaining to W Magazine in 2007 What I wear walking into my community service has no connection to what I’m going to do when I get inside. This is how I dress, and this is how I carry myself. What do they expect me to do, walk in looking all drib and drab? I’ve never looked drib and drab in my life.”

The world was in shock in 2010 when Alexander McQueen tragically passed away. No more so than the creatives he had worked with who, in keeping with the designers wishes attended his funeral dressed to the nines. Naomi still managed to look chic in this feathered creation by the late designer himself paired with large sunglasses and her signature sleek hair. A fitting tribute to one of Britain’s greatest fashion talents…

Naomi is arguably one of the best British models to be working in the industry today and is always proud to represent the U.K internationally, stating in many interviews that her personal style has always been influenced by London so it was a no-brainer that she would be chosen to represent the U.K during the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in 2012. Alongside fellow supermodels Kate Moss, David Gandy and Lily Cole, Naomi left us all in awe as she strutted the makeshift runway dripping in gold, created again by Alexander McQueen. Whilst the other models were all fabulous it was Ms. Campbell who made the lasting impression looking every inch the goddess we all know she is!

Coming full circle since the days of ‘Freedom ’90’, Naomi and her fellow original supermodels wowed us all last year when they returned to the catwalk together to pay tribute to the late, great Gianni Versace in the fashion houses Spring/Summer 2018 show at Milan Fashion Week. The runway icons all took to the catwalk in slinky, gold gowns proving that once a legend, always a legend. Once again, Naomi was centre stage and gave a moving post-show tribute to the late designer telling Vogue that so many times. I can hear him in my mind, telling me don’t do this, get out of this situation. And I obey. I owe it to him that I am still alive.”
