Last night was the biggest fashion fundraising event in the calendar- the annual Costume Institute Gala aka The Met Gala, so of course social media has been buzzing with excitement this morning with discussions of what our favourite celebs walked the famous red staircase in.
With a theme of ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’ the event aimed to showcase the influence that the church has had on fashion throughout the years. Controversial? Yes. But did that stop guests showing up in jaw-dropping outfits with a religious twist? Absolutely not.
Here’s our pick of the best dressed of the night from those that chose to stick to the theme (no offence Kendall…)
Rihanna in Maison Margiela by John Galliano
Let’s start with the undisputed Queen of the Met, Rihanna. Never one to shy away from controversy, the Bajan singer walked the carpet in a custom-made Maison Margiela papal-inspired dress and coat complete with headwear designed after the pontiff’s famous hat. She even arrived at the event in her own pope-mobile! Talk about being committed to your look…
Blake Lively in Versace
Fresh from putting the fear of God into us last week after unfollowing her husband, Ryan Reynolds, and deleting all her Instagram posts, the actress arrived at the event in this show-stopping Versace gown which is rumoured to have taken 600 hours (that’s 25 days!) to make.
Priyanka Chopra in Ralph Lauren
Bollywood meets Hollywood meets The Vatican. Priyanka played it simple with her choice of a deep burgundy Ralph Lauren dress and let the bejewelled hood do all the talking. Paired with the finger waves and a red lip we think she looks nothing short of divine.
Diane Kruger in Prabal Gurung
What would the Met Gala be without a show-stopping train? This year actress Diane Kruger gave us all modern-day Cinderella vibes in her powder blue Prabal Gurung gown, complete with ruched sleeves, lace veil and a train that was just made to be photographed on the museums infamous stairs.
Katy Perry in Versace
If there’s one place to make a statement and ensure that you’re the talk of the night the Met Gala is it, not exactly known for being shy or understated Katy wowed photographers and other guests alike by attending in a Versace chainmail mini dress and a huge six-foot set of feathered wings. Definitely not one for nipping into the shops…
Kate Bosworth in Oscar de la Renta
If Katy Perry was the representation of the Angel Gabriel, then Kate Bosworth was definitely the embodiment of the Virgin Mary. Walking the red carpet in a dramatic Oscar de la Renta dress and a veil that required two assistants to handle for photo opportunities Kate is every inch a ‘Heavenly Body”.
Sarah Jessica Parker in Dolce & Gabbana
Last but not least, what would the Met Gala be without the Queen of Queens, SJP? Always on point with the events theme Sarah Jessica once again didn’t disappoint in her gold Dolce and Gabanna dress paired with, wait for it… a NATIVITY scene on her head. Speaking of the fashion at the annual event the actress said, ‘one can only do your best’. Somehow, we think this may be beyond our best SJP…
