At only 20 years old, Halima Aden is already breaking barriers after becoming the first hijab-wearing woman to feature on a cover of Vogue and to sign to prestigious modelling agency, IMG. After making her catwalk debut during Kanye’s Yeezy Season 5 collection, she’s gone on to rule the runway at Milan Fashion Week, shoot Nike campaigns and more recently, cover Grazia UK.
She can hold her own against the likes of Bella Hadid and Romee Strijd when strutting down the catwalk, and if recent Instagram snaps are anything to go by, she’s also able to turn the street into her very own runway. Everyone in the Looker office is lusting over a vinyl mac, but the chances of us looking like either a flasher or an extra from The Matrix are pretty high. Halima, on the otherhand, doesn’t have that issue and in doing so, proves that modest fashion can be anything but boring.
Her coat leans more towards leather than PVC giving it a subtler glossy sheen but with enough edge to toughen up a traditional black coat. Do like Halima and opt for a neutral, autumnal colour palette – think chocolate browns and charcoal. If there’s only one piece of style inspo you take from this look, make sure it’s the layering. The cropped coat paired with a long sleeve top is the ideal combo when it comes to battling September’s unpredictable weather.
